According to Heathrow Airport CEO, LBC, passengers are experiencing delays in part because of the increased number of baggage and liquids they are bringing on board.
There’s an increased concern about checked baggage theft, according to him, therefore travellers are bringing more liquids with them.
According to John Holland-Kaye, who spoke to LBC, airport delays are being exacerbated by staffing shortages.
Passengers are causing airport delays by taking more bags and liquids past security, says the CEO of Europe’s biggest airport.
There have been several stories from passengers flying out of the UK’s London Heathrow Airport this summer of flight delays and cancellations, as well as misplaced baggage.
Heathrow’s CEO, John Holland-Kaye, told the radio programme Leading Britain’s Conversation (LBC) on Tuesday that customers “travelling with more than they typically would” are to blame for the airport’s lengthy lines.
People are also carrying “more liquids in their baggage, so that takes a little bit longer,” he said.
Holland-Kaye told LBC that “a lot of people are put off from checking in all of their cosmetics, for example, because they are afraid if their suitcase will make the flight with them.”

Many airline travellers have reported their lost bags in the last month. For one, the missing bag held their parents’ ashes, while another claimed her wedding garment was hidden within the ill-fated knapsack.
On the matter of airline delays, Holland-Kaye told LBC that people need to be informed on what they can and cannot take in their hand baggage. Passengers are permitted to carry a one-liter clear bag of liquids on board, according to the laws of the UK government, he stated in an interview. In his opinion, some individuals don’t realise that makeup is a liquid, and should be treated as such.
Extra baggage and liquids are not the only causes of airport delays, according to Holland-Kaye. There are now as many airport security employees as there were pre-pandemic at Heathrow, he claimed in an interview.
“A lot of them are new so they are taking time to settle in,” Holland-Kaye said on LBC.
There aren’t enough luggage handlers to satisfy the present high demand, Holland-Kaye told LBC. However, he said that airlines chose which ground handling businesses to partner with, not the airport.
